On the farms the boys helped grow and harvest crops. Girls helped with sewing and mending clothes. Both the boys and girls could help with the animals. New York and Philadelphia were the biggest cities. People were merchants and workers. Boys could learn shoe or boat making. Girls could open a cloth shop. Families would believe that children should learn how to run the family farm instead of going to college.
